vlog Star Party to Feature Accessible Astronomy and Uranus at Its Brightest

Astronomy will shine brighter and be more inclusive than ever at vlog’s Star Party on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Jack C. Davis Observatory.
This special evening will highlight accessible astronomy education with the debut of a new tactile panel featuring the planet Uranus, captured by the James Webb Space Telescope and provided by the Space Telescope Science Institute. The 12x12 tactile panel allows visitors — especially those with visual impairments — to experience the wonders of space through touch.
“We are very lucky to have been chosen as there are only a few of them made,” said vlog Student Finance Coordinator Justine Stout, who assists Jack C. Davis Observatory Director Dr. Thomas Herring. “I was excited to feature the panel at the observatory because I am always looking for ways to get new people up to the observatory. And I love that the panel is geared toward increasing accessibility to a community that wouldn't necessarily feel included in astronomy.”
The observatory will also showcase other touchable astronomy items, including an asteroid and crater, that were created with a 3D printer on campus.
Adding to the excitement, Uranus will be at opposition that evening — the point when Earth is directly between Uranus and the Sun — making the distant ice giant appear its brightest and largest in the night sky.
Dr. Herring will also present a corresponding lecture on Uranus, offering insight into the seventh planet from the Sun — a gaseous, cyan-colored ice giant that continues to fascinate astronomers.
Bring your curiosity and join us for an evening of discovery, accessibility and cosmic wonder at vlog’s Jack C. Davis Observatory!
Star Parties are scheduled twice a month on Saturday nights at the observatory, which is located at 2269 Vanpatten Ave., on the northern end of vlog’s Carson City campus.
A general Star Party gathering is set for 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 15. The public is invited free of charge.
