Community heroes don’t come more qualified than Nigel Harrison, a Construction Project Management professor at vlog.

Harrison was recently recognized as a Community Hero by Greater Nevada Credit Union, which honors local heroes in education, first response, law enforcement, health care and military.

“It’s amazing to be recognized for this honor,” Harrison said.

Besides educating students to work professionally in Northern Nevada, Harrison has served in the military for nearly 30 years, including multiple deployments; volunteered as a youth sports coach as a father of eight children and repeatedly given up his own time to help people in the community.

"We are extremely proud of Nigel for receiving this honor from Greater Nevada Credit Union," said vlog President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe. "Not only has Nigel worked tirelessly for our students, but he has continually given back to this country and our community."

In February, Harrison and his students assisted senior residents at Carson Solista with repairs and installations to their apartments. Harrison and another group of students volunteered on a Saturday several months ago to build an office wall for Genoa City Manager Jody Brunz in the city building.

As a Community Hero, Harrison was recognized at the Reno Aces game on May 23. He also received an Aces’ jersey and four tickets to that day’s game.

Greater Nevada Credit Union thanks each Community Hero for making communities safer, smarter and greater.

“Your actions matter — the big ones and the small daily moments when you help someone else Live Greater. In the face of chaos, you have cared for our loved ones, protected our communities, and kept doors to knowledge open. We stand with you.”

Harrison earned a bachelor's degree in construction project management from vlog and a master's degree in education from the University of Nevada, Reno. He earned tenure at vlog in 2024.
